Cesar Millan, (born César Felipe Millán Favela; August 27, 1969) is a Mexican-American self-taught dog behaviorist.[3] He is widely known for his television series Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, which was produced from 2004 to 2012 and is broadcast in more than eighty countries worldwide.[4] Prior to The Dog Whisperer series, Millan focused on rehabilitating severely aggressive dogs[5] and founded the Dog Psychology Center[6] in South Los Angeles (2002–2008). In 2009,[7] the Dog Psychology Center moved to Santa Clarita, California.[8] Millan also opened an East Coast clinic at the Country Inn Pet Resort in Davie, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale.[9]
Millan's first three books, including Cesar's Way, all became New York Times best sellers, have cumulatively sold two million copies in the United States, and are available in 14 other countries.[7] In 2009, in conjunction with IMG, Millan introduced a monthly magazine also titled Cesar's Way, with The Wall Street Journal reporting at that time that half of American consumers recognized Millan.[10] The magazine ceased publication after its November/December 2014 issue. With Ilusión Millan, his former wife, he founded the Millan Foundation – later renamed the Cesar Millan Foundation and currently called the Cesar Millan PACK Project.[11] Among other projects, the Foundation worked with Yale University to create a children's curriculum based on his work.[7]
Millan has said, "My goal in rehabilitating dogs and training people is to create balanced relationships between humans and canines."[9] In 2009, The New York Times attributed Millan's success to his personal sense of balance,[7] describing this as "a sort of über-balanced mien".[7] Millan's methods have been criticized by the animal welfare charity RSPCA and by the broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh as being "cruel" and also "unnecessary".[12] In 2010, Millan was hospitalized after an attempted suicide.[13] In April 2016, he announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Jahira Dar.[14]
The German Shepherd (German: Deutscher Schäferhund, German pronunciation: [ˈʃɛːfɐˌhʊnt]) is a breed of medium to large-sized working dog that originated in Germany. The breed's officially recognized name is German Shepherd Dog in the English language, sometimes abbreviated as GSD and was also formerly known as the Alsatian in Britain.[5] The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time, however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability, and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and even acting.[6] The German Shepherd is the second-most registered breed by the American Kennel Club[7] and fourth-most registered breed by The Kennel Club in the United Kingdom.[8]
