Mindfulness Wales and Professor Mark Williams: Deepening our Mindfulness Practice

Mark Williams is the leading figure in bringing mindfulness practice into the UK.
With colleagues, he has recently developed a new course for people who want to explore mindfulness more deeply.
Recent psychological understanding shows the central role in our experience of ‘feeling tone’: the moment-by-moment ‘read-out’ of whether the things we contact feel pleasant, unpleasant, or neither. That determines how the body allocates its resources as it gears up for action.
Ancient traditions saw feeling tone as a fundamental element of experience and an important aspect of mindfulness. Registering it allows us to see our tipping points: the moments when we get caught up in pursuing or rejecting something and then become entangled in a web of emotional distress.
The new course, called Frame by Frame, extends mindfulness to being aware of feeling tone and we find greater mental freedom as our lives are less governed by blind reactions.
Welshman Professor Mark Williams founded the mindfulness centres in Bangor and Oxord Universities. With colleagues, he developed the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course for depression relapse, which is widely used in the NHS. He is the co-author of the bestselling Mindfulness: Finding Peace in a Frantic World.
