In 2020, the FDA gave approval for Alcon's extended depth of focus lens. This lens acts more like a monofocal lens and does not have the rings associated with multifocal lenses. This lens is potentially a better fit for patients with chronic disease conditions such as mild epiretinal membrane or glaucoma since it does not split light like a multifocal. Also, this is a better fit for patients with previous myopic laser vision correction compared to a multifocal as well. The lens also comes with astigmatism correction capabilities.
