The Theatre of Marcellus was the brainchild of Julius Caesar who, unfortunately, was assassinated before the building work could be completed. The theatre was eventually finished by Augustus.

Over the centuries the building itself fell into decline - fortunately, in the 1920s the Rome city council bought the lower sections of the building and restored them. Some very lucky souls live in apartments atop the theatre and no doubt have a wonderful view of Rome and the Tiber.
