Architects - Memento Mori Lyric Video - Tom Searle Tribute
   • Architects - "Memento Mori" Lyric Vid...

Memento Mori by Architects is a song about mortality, but more specifically, the mortality of the lead guitarist/main songwriter, Tom Searle. Back in 2014, during the production of their 6th studio album, "Lost Forever // Lost Together," Searle contracted melanoma, a rare type of skin cancer. Luckily, he got surgery to remove it and then proceeded to write the song, "C.A.N.C.E.R," which is an amazing song worth checking out. However, in 2015 during the production of their 7th studio album, "All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us," he contracted it again. He was then told the chances of survival were highly unlikely. Despite all of this, he completed the album and it was released on May 27th, 2016, being their best work yet. Sadly, only 3 months later, right before the last few shows of the tour, he passed away. He allegedly kept the fact that his survival was unlikely from his bandmates, including his twin brother, Dan Searle. Because of this, they didn't realize that a lot of the lyrics on the album were about him and his inevitable death. Looking back at the album, it seems as though it was meant to be a representation of his mental journey through accepting his fate. Most of the album seems to have a deeper and somewhat hidden message of his struggles to accept it, with the final song (this one) being the acceptance. This song by itself, in my opinion, is one of the best pieces of music ever written. You can 100% tell that Searle put everything he had left into this one final piece, and it stands as the most powerful memento of his legacy (No pun intended). With all that being said, I hope ya'll enjoy the song :)

TSArtwork SAYS
It's hard to find words for this. It just came so out of the bushes for me. Tom and Architects has been one of my biggest musical inspirations and influences for over 7 years. Tom's talent both as a guitarist and a songwriter was remarkable and monumental. His and the band's work has always shaped the whole metalcore genre to a whole new direction. They are the spark that still keeps the genre alive and fresh and succeeds to shape metal music as a whole. Rest easy, Tom Searle.

My utmost condolences goes to Dan, Sam, Alex, Adam and the whole Searle family and friends. Stay strong.

"The 'Swan Song' is a metaphorical phrase for a final gesture, effort, or performance given just before death or retirement. The phrase refers to an ancient belief that swans sing a song more beautiful than ever in the moment just before death, having been silent during most of their lifetime."
