Sherrie Smith was born and raised on the west side of Detroit. She’s an Urban Farmer, Gardener and lover of connection. Ms. Smith’s talk examines how a record numbers of gardens, parks, and green spaces are being added to urban neighborhoods, and yet how many have failed to result in building any true sense of community. She discusses simple “seeds” that we all can “plant”, that will grow into a local harvest of healthy relationships. Sherrie Smith was born in 1979 in Detroit, Michigan to her loving parents, Larry and Sylvia. The youngest of 3 children, she loved to read, imagine and talk! An Alum of Detroit Public Schools and Cass Tech High School graduate, after high school she attended Michigan Technological University, University of Detroit Mercy, Oakland County Community College and Rochester College before graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Counseling Psychology in 2005.

Ms. Smith has a love for people that she has expressed through mentoring, community organizing, volunteering and farming and gardening. One of the things Ms. Smith is most proud of is homeschooling her two youngest children. She aims to ensure that all people that she meets feel loved and are mentally healthy and supported. Today she is a mother of four via biology and adoption and is fully invested in expressing radical love to build connection and community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
