Labor MP Tanya Plibersek has been demoted because Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has “long seen her as a leadership rival,” says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

Ms Plibersek has been given the environment and water portfolio, after Labor’s shadow environment minister Terri Butler lost her seat to a Greens MP.

“She’s got to handle the Murray Darling Basin – one of the most contentious and difficult and unsolvable issues in Australian politics,” Mr Clennell said.

“He says she’s happy … it seems to me that she’s been demoted.

“I always think that’s a little bit unwise.”
