News is reporting of recent events to the public. The digital transformation of news from the traditional newsprint to modern smartphones is the new trend-setter around the globe. User-generated content and citizen journalism have democratized mass media. In spite of these advancements, our world is under the threat of fake news, misinformation and sensationalism of news.

Developing countries are facing a much greater threat to their democratic process and public opinion building due to the accelerated growth of fake news and misinformation channels. Psychological impacts of these deliberate campaigns on people are catastrophic.

News should bear the dignity of truth, accuracy, fairness and impartiality, since we are living in a converging world where a news item from other continents moves us and affects us.

UNESCO‘s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) is designed to mobilize the international community to discuss and promote media development in the developing countries. It is critical for democratic societies to address these challenges collaboratively. This program brings together world’s best journalists and thought-leaders with a common mission of empowering journalism, promoting media literacy and protecting the pillars of democracy.
