Russia-Ukraine conflict: Stoltenberg explains why NATO won’t enforce no-fly zone

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg explained on Friday why the military alliance would not impose or enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine, or put troops on the ground as the Russian assault on Ukraine continues.

“We have a responsibility as NATO allies to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine,” he said, adding that the only way NATO could implement a no-fly zone is to send NATO fighter planes into Ukrainian airspace and “impose that no-fly zone by shooting down Russian planes.”

He said doing so could end in a “full-fledged war in Europe.”

Stoltenberg said NATO would continue to step up its support of Ukraine, impose heavy sanctions and call for a diplomatic end to the conflict, but would not send troops into Ukraine.
