Journalist who exposed 'salt-roti' midday meal in UP: Lessons from Pawan Jaiswal's life and death

Описание к видео Journalist who exposed 'salt-roti' midday meal in UP: Lessons from Pawan Jaiswal's life and death

On May 5, journalist #PawanJaiswal passed away in a private hospital in #Varanasi, after an eight-month battle with cancer. A month before his death, he posted an appeal on Twitter – tagging #YogiAdityanath, #AkhileshYadav, and #PriyankaGandhiVadra – begging for funds for his treatment.

Pawan was best known for a story he did in 2019 that exposed how children in a local school were being fed salt-roti as a mid-day meal – a story for which he was rewarded with an FIR from the administration.

The death of a journalist is hardly news anymore. Over the past two years, nearly 700 Indian journalists have lost their lives to Covid. But Pawan’s appeal for help points at a deeper rot – of small-town journalists struggling to make ends meet. His life, and death, shows how hard it is to practice honest, reportage-driven journalism, especially if you're not based in a metro city.

In towns like #Mirzapur, journalists are not paid by the news, but by the advertisements they bring to their organisations. They have no financial security and, like Pawan, are unable to secure enough for even basic healthcare.
