The temple's high priest Mahant, who sexually preys on devadasis, selects a young girl to sleep with, to which Maitreyi opposes. Mahant abuses Maitreyi in anger and disrespects her in front of everyone. Upon discovering this, an enraged Shyam attacks Mahant in the temple. He punishes him by torturing and throwing him onto burning coal, killing him and removing the necklace on Maitreyi, implying discontinuing her duties as Devadasi. Later Shyam and Maitreyi move to Calcutta where he starts working in a printing press and there they both get married and start new life.
