Half an inning earlier, Maddon had unsuccessfully challenged a slide rule interference no-call at second base, which ultimately led not just to the no interference call being confirmed, but actually resulted in an overturned call and baserunner Jonathan Davis being awarded second base when Blue Jays Manager Charlie Montoyo counter-challenged that Angels shortstop Jose Iglesias had come off the bag before fielding the throw.

Seven Toronto runs later, Replay Review again affirmed an umpire's call after a Maddon challenge, this time confirming 1B Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt's ruling that Juan Lagares was out at first base.

Maddon was ejected from the game following this second lost challenge.
