'How Do You Get Rid of a Prime Minister?'

When Boris Johnson faces Sir Keir Starmer, he’ll know that some of his fiercest critics will be sat behind, as well as in front of him.

Some of his own MPs have publicly called for him to go, and some others are privately of the same opinion.

A group of the newest Conservative politicians, elected when Johnson surged to power in 2019, are believed to be preparing letters of no confidence. They held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

If 54 Tory MPs submit letters, it would trigger a leadership contest. Rumours swirl that the number could be reached soon.

Only MP Sir Graham Brady, chair of the Conservative backbench 1922 committee - who receives and counts up the no-confidence requests - knows the exact number.

It’s an influential committee of backbench Conservative MPs that meets every week when the Commons is sitting.

This will be Johnson’s last chance of survival.

Should he lose the vote, he would not be allowed to take part in the subsequent leadership contest.

Ballots are then held over a period of around 12 weeks, This eliminates candidates until only two are left.

It is by this process that Boris Johnson became prime minister in July 2019.

If rumours of a no-confidence vote are true, Boris’ tenure in number ten could end just as it began - with a battle for leadership.
