When it comes to princesses of the animated variety, Disney pretty much invented the concept. Speaking of concept, these royal gals didn’t originally appear as we see them on screen. Let’s take a look at how these ladies were first imagined.

Disney has been making animated feature films since 1937 and in order to make sure that Disney's films’ characters are as visually compelling as possible, Disney starts with concept art. Through the creative process, the visual design of a movie’s characters is evolved.

Still, it’s super interesting to look back at where the film’s artists started when it comes to these princesses. There are often huge differences between the original character concept art and what those characters look like in the final film. In this video, we’re exploring how beloved characters like Elsa from Frozen, and Ariel from The Little Mermaid, would have looked if animators had gone with the OG designs in their concept art. From Belle’s casual hair in Beauty and the Beast to Jasmine’s excessively revealing outfit in Aladdin to almost everything about Pocahontas’ look from her age to her costume, Disney hasn’t let history stand between it and a preferred character design. We’re looking into the way some of Disney’s most famous princesses would have looked!
