Ep.1 Grow Sweet Potato In Aquarium

Описание к видео Ep.1 Grow Sweet Potato In Aquarium

Today i will attempt to grow a sweet potato plant in my aquarium which will serve as a free DIY Nitrates filter. Welcome again to Fishaholic and to tackle issues created by ammonia by products which could be a result of fish waste, excess food, dead aquatic plants. I have decided to add a sweet potato to my fish tank which will be half submerged in the tank. It means that i won't have to worry about cleaning dead leaves, as i could easily remove them from the plant and the roots will absorb heaps of nitrates to keep the water clean and they will also provide shelter to aquarium inhabitants.

The reason i decided to chose sweet potato plant is that because it can have roots water logged and they won't rot. It builds a healthy root system very fast which will filter the water and also provide hiding place to the stressed fish. If a stem of the plant is submerged in the water then it will start growing roots and would boost the filtration. Sweet potato is very hardy plant and doesn't require too much light and stay alives for a longer period of time.

Freshly bought Australian grown sweet potato from the supermarket were used in this project. Rather than adding it to the fish tank, i left sweet potato in a plastic cup. After a week, it started to grow roots and leaves and after a month i decided to add it to the aquarium. I build a small container to hold the plant and attached it to the glass of the tank through a suction cup. No special tools were used in this project and it is something you could easily build at home.

Aquatic plants do provide good source of filtration but maintaining them is a hard job. By growing sweet potato plant in a fish tank you can easily minimise the maintenance and take benefit of this best and free nitrates filter. Just remember there is no need to provide CO2 or fertilizer to this plant as it can absorb C02 from the air and the all ammonia, nitrites and nitrates can fertilise the plant.
