Causes of Colic in Babies and Its Preventive Measures | Medicover Hospitals

In this video, Dr. Navitha, Consultant Pediatrician, Medicover Women and Child Hospitals, Speaks about Colic in babies. It is a deformity that affects Newborn babies. Babies with colic have high pitch cry, clenches the fist, turns red, arches the back & usually have a gaseous abdomen. one in every five babies suffer from colic. It starts at 2-3 weeks of life, reaches its peak at six weeks, and gets eradicated after 4-5 months.
The symptoms of colic in babies:
· High pitched cry
· Clenching of fists
· Turning red
· Arching of the back
· Resist burping (usually feel relieved after burping)

The causes of colic in babies:
· Immature digestive system in the babies.
· Imbalance in the gut flora.
· Mothers taking certain foods like caffeine, chocolates, dairy products, nuts, and wheat.

The parents should consult the doctor if the baby is showing unusual symptoms like -
· Not accepting the feed well.
· Suffering from fever and rashes.
· If the baby is not active then usual.
· If the baby is not passing the urine as usual.

Since there is no medicine as such to cure this, it can be treated by following few simple procedures like:
· Changing the position of the baby(whenever the baby feels uncomfortable).
· By putting the baby to the chest.
· Playing soft music around the baby.
· Change the formula of the milk (if the baby is suffering from milk allergy).
· The mother should stop taking dairy products if she’s feeding the baby.
