Furious Speaker tears into Rishi Sunak: A minister would resign in olden days!

Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has lashed out against Boris Johnson's government bypassing the House of Commons. The Speaker is not amused at all about the number of Budget previews, eg on NHS funding, which has come out over the weekend.



Sir Lindsay Hoyle suggested ministers should resign for pre-briefing details of the Budget, as he said it was unacceptable for the government to “try to run roughshod” over Parliament.


Sir Lindsay Hoyle just told MPs: "At one time, ministers did the right thing if they before before a budget - they walked!"

The £5.9bn package unveiled on Sunday evening is aimed at tackling waiting lists, with the number of people waiting routine hospital treatment in England at the highest levels since records began in 2007.

In response, Sir Lindsay granted an urgent question on the funding on Monday, saying the deputy speaker, Dame Eleanor Lang, was “also very upset” at the decision to trail details in advance to the media, before MPs.
