Robert Neville, a lieutenant colonel of the US Army Medical Service, lives in post-apocalyptic New York, patrolling the streets of the city, resupplying supplies from empty buildings, hunting deer and medical experiments to make a serum against the virus. He is apparently the only surviving person in New York. Attempts to find other survivors using radio communications are unsuccessful. However, he is not alone in the city. It is surrounded by infected people who have become bestial predators and are nocturnal due to their painful sensitivity to sunlight - they die when exposed to ultraviolet light. His only friend is a German shepherd named Sam (Samantha). Robert is disciplined, plays sports and believes that he must survive and find a cure for the virus that destroyed humanity. However, his life is very lonely. In order not to go crazy, he, either jokingly, or already in earnest, talks to the mannequins in the store and to his dog. He also tapes himself, explaining his experiments, which boil down to infecting captured monsters with serum made from his blood, but this does not work. Despite this, he does not despair and discovers that his serum still has a positive effect on one of the laboratory rats.
