Yale Russian Chorus: Bylo delo pod Poltavoy (The Battle of Poltava). In 1709, the Russian army, under the command of Peter the Great, overwhelmed the forces of Charles XII of Sweden at Poltava, a town in central Ukraine. The victory marked the beginning of Russia’s ascent as a great European power.
This mid-19th-century song is a kind of tongue-in-cheek patriotic account of Peter’s legendary exploits. The text is attributed to Ivan Molchanov (1801-1881), founder of the first professional choir in Russia dedicated to the performance of folk music. The melody is derived from an anonymous 18th-century celebratory choral work.
