Cyclone Amphan: Indian Prime Minister Modi visits hard-hit Kolkata, offers aid

Peering down from an aircraft, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw on Friday the devastation and flooding caused by the most powerful cyclone to hit India in more than a decade, before making landfall in the city of Kolkata.

At least 80 people died when cyclone Amphan swept in from the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday, with an evacuation of some three million people before the cyclone struck.

Modi announced emergency aid of 10 billion rupees ($131.66 million) to help the state at a time when it and the rest of the country are dealing with the coronavirus outbreak.
