Law Minister K Shanmugam on Tuesday (Nov 29) took issue with the Workers' Party's stance on a Constitutional amendment Bill to repeal Section 377A - a law criminalising sex between gay men in Singapore. WP chief and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh had said WP MPs had different views on whether it should be repealed. Mr Singh lifted the party whip for them, allowing them to vote freely and not along party lines.

Said Mr Shanmugam: "The real point is that the WP as a party does not want to take a stand on this matter. It does not want to be seen as supporting the repeal. At the same time, it also does not want to be seen as opposing the repeal. That way, it hopes to be all things to all men and not too much of anything to anyone," he said.
