North Korea launched a ballistic missile early Tuesday morning that flew over Japan before reportedly crashing into the Pacific Ocean, in the first such test to follow such a trajectory over the island since 2017.

The launch prompted Japanese officials to warn residents to take cover, a warning that was later cancelled once it was determined where the missile had landed. Tokyo said it took no steps to shoot the missile down, but Defence Minister Yasukazu did not rule out counterattack capabilities.

The launch was Pyongyang's fifth in 10 days and comes a week after anti-submarine drills were held between the U.S., South Korea and Japan. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said "such reckless nuclear provocation" would face "resolute response" from its military, as well as allies and the international community.
