Muskaan (Kajol) is an orphan girl living on a farm run by her overly-protective older brother, Vishal (Arbaaz Khan) and their 'Chachu' (Dharmendra). Muskaan's childhood friend, Ujaala (Anjala Zaveri), has been carrying a torch for the brooding Vishal since childhood, but he won't give her the time of day. Later on, Muskaan decides she wants to go to a university in Mumbai and has to persuade her brother to let her go. Once in the big city, Suraj (Salman Khan), an underachieving student, who does not get along with his stepmother and is estranged from his father, falls in love with Muskaan. After a few attempts at messing with Muskaan and trying to get her attention, Suraj finally succeeds and Muskaan falls in love with him. One day, when Vishal comes to visit Muskaan, he is mistakenly considered her boyfriend by Suraj and his group of friends. They consequently try to fight Vishal but are instead beaten up. Suraj later learns from Muskaan that Vishal is her brother and he apologizes to Muskaan and Vishal for beating him up. But Vishal does not like Suraj because his terms and conditions of his future brother-in-law are very strenuous physically and he thinks Suraj is neither competent nor a man to be taken seriously. And he decides to bring Muskaan back to the farm sensing Suraj's bad influence on her studies. Suraj pursues her and begins to work on the farm as a stable boy after a chance meeting with 'Chachu' in which he saves Chachu's life.

मुस्कान (काजोल) एक अनाथ लड़की है जो अपने अति-सुरक्षात्मक बड़े भाई विशाल (अरबाज खान) और उनके 'चाचू' (धर्मेंद्र) द्वारा संचालित फार्म में रहती है। मुस्कान की बचपन की दोस्त, उजाला (अंजला ज़वेरी), बचपन से ही विशाल के लिए मशाल लेकर घूम रही है, लेकिन वह उसे दिन का समय नहीं देता है। बाद में, मुस्कान ने फैसला किया कि वह मुंबई के एक विश्वविद्यालय में जाना चाहती है और उसे अपने भाई को उसे जाने देने के लिए मनाना होगा। एक बार बड़े शहर में, सूरज (सलमान खान), एक कम उपलब्धि वाला छात्र, जिसकी अपनी सौतेली माँ के साथ नहीं बनती और जो अपने पिता से अलग रहता है, को मुस्कान से प्यार हो जाता है। मुस्कान के साथ खिलवाड़ करने और उसका ध्यान आकर्षित करने की कुछ कोशिशों के बाद, सूरज आखिरकार सफल हो जाता है और मुस्कान को उससे प्यार हो जाता है। एक दिन, जब विशाल मुस्कान से मिलने आता है, तो सूरज और उसके दोस्तों के समूह ने गलती से उसे उसका प्रेमी समझ लिया। परिणामस्वरूप वे विशाल से लड़ने की कोशिश करते हैं लेकिन बदले में उन्हें पीटा जाता है। सूरज को बाद में मुस्कान से पता चलता है कि विशाल उसका भाई है और वह मुस्कान और विशाल से उसे पीटने के लिए माफी मांगता है। लेकिन विशाल को सूरज पसंद नहीं है क्योंकि उसके भावी जीजा के नियम और शर्तें शारीरिक रूप से बहुत कठिन हैं और उसे लगता है कि सूरज न तो सक्षम है और न ही ऐसा व्यक्ति है जिसे गंभीरता से लिया जाना चाहिए। और वह मुस्कान की पढ़ाई पर सूरज के बुरे प्रभाव को महसूस करते हुए मुस्कान को वापस खेत में लाने का फैसला करता है।
