Software Sunday EP9: Neverware Cloudready: Turn Any PC Into a Chromebook

Cloudready by Neverware claims to take your everyday laptop / desktop and turn it into a full fledged Chromebook. In today's installment of Software Sunday we are going to see how easy it is to install Cloudready and what it has to offer as a lightweight yet functional Chromium based OS.

Getting started was fairly simple. The installation instructions on the Cloudready website were straightforward and easy to follow. The "Home Use" version is absolutely free and offers 32-bit and 64-bit images. Just download which ever image suites you, add the Chromebook recovery utility to chrome and run it, select the Cloudready zip, and finally select the destination drive to install it to (flash drive 8GB or greater is recommended).

The installation does take a little while but once it has completed plug the installation media into the PC and select to boot from it in your BIOS. After following these steps your PC should now boot into the Cloudready live environment. From here you can now install Cloudready to your HDD, it has options to perform a dual boot installation (needs UEFI) or a singular install where it wipes everything on the HDD.

I originally intended to run Cloud ready on my Dell Latitude 2120 since it is older and I wanted to see how Cloudready would run on older hardware. I did get to play around with the live image for a little on that system, it was very snappy and overall I was impressed with the performance. Though, unfortunately the HDD in that system was dead and I could not perform a full install. Instead I performed a full install on my Dell Inspiron 15 (3521).

The OS performed flawlessly on my Inspiron 15. All of my hardware was immediately recognized (a pleasant surprise) and the overall system performance was impressive. Boot time was under 15 seconds and all applications opened almost instantly. I was even able to install a few android apps which made the offline experience much more tolerable.

I was pleased by the performance and ease of use of Cloudready. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a simple Chromebook experience to add to their existing hardware.
