Omega watches like the Speedmaster and Seamaster rank among the most researched, sought, and shopped luxury watches in the world. Second only to Rolex in the mainstream of Swiss watch luxury, Omega has a history of offering outstanding value, innovation, and real heritage to match. Tonight, Tim Mosso predicts the 2024 Omega watch debuts and changes.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch is the most iconic watch Omega makes and one of the greatest names in all of watchmaking. As the watch that flew with Apollo astronauts to the Moon, the Speedmaster chronograph has no equal in stature among Omega watches. For 2024, Omega may return to its "Dark Side of the Moon" collection of ceramic Speedmasters with a new model that combines the 44.25mm ceramic case with a caliber 321 column wheel chronograph movement.

An additional possibility is that Omega decides to phase out its Speedmaster Caliber 321 "Ed White" for a new vintage re-edition based on the historic Speedmaster Professional 105.012. This model, which launched in 1964, will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2024. As the first "Speedmaster Professional" model, the 105.012 was also the first certified for official use by NASA astronauts. It flew on the entire series of Apollo three-man space missions that eventually reached the Moon.

Often, the watches most likely to be redesigned are those that have reached the end of their model cycle; age of the models usually is the telltale. Last refreshed in 2016, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean collection is due for a redesign and relaunch. While the quality, capabilities, and technology of the Planet Oceans remain competitive, the watches suffer from excessive size, excessive thickness, uncompetitive power reserves, and over production.

Size in particular is a challenge for the Planet Ocean series. Cases up to 45.5mm are difficult to wear on even average sized male wrists. Case thickness of up to 19mm prompts unfavorable comparisons to rival Rolex dive watches that are far thinner.

The longest Seamaster Planet Ocean power reserve of 60 hours is uncompetitive with the 70-hour autonomy of every Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller. Finally, Omega simply builds too many Planet Ocean dive watches. Used and grey market examples can be found in abundance online, at physical stores, and even wholesale retailers like Costco. Omega needs to address all of these shortcomings with a new generation of Seamaster Planet Ocean, and one may arrive in 2024.
