This video was created as a part of DemocracyReady NY's New York Civic Learning Week webinar series. DemocracyReady NY is a project of the Center for Educational Equity at Teachers College, Columbia University.

The Summit focuses on how educators, administrators, students, and policymakers are navigating the risks and opportunities for teaching civic readiness in times of heightened civic and political polarization.

This event features remarks from The State University of New York Chancellor and former U.S. Department of Education Secretary, John B. King, Jr., J.D., Ed.D followed by a panel of school stakeholders and a panel of policymakers.

Cynthia Sandler, Library Media Specialist at North Salem Middle School/High School moderated a discussion with panelists Kevin Feinberg, senior program director for Facing History and Ourselves' New York Regional Office; Beth Pyskaty, social studies teacher at Niagara Wheatfield Central School District; Tracy Norman, assistant superintendent for instruction at Lakeland Schools, and Chris Kobara, NYC high school student and YVote changemaker.

Jonathan Collins, Ph.D, associate director at the Center for Educational Equity at Teachers College, Columbia University, moderated a discussion with policymakers. This panel featured Shelley Mayer, New York State Senate Education Committee Chair; the Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel at New York State School Boards Association, Jay Worona; and the New York State Education Department Senior Deputy Commissioner for Education Policy, Jeffrey Matteson.
