La historia del Cusco es fascinante y se remonta a tiempos antiguos. Antes de la llegada de los españoles en el siglo XVI, la ciudad era el centro del Imperio Inca, conocido como Tawantinsuyu en quechua, que significa "cuatro regiones unidas". Los incas construyeron el Cusco como la capital de su vasto imperio, convirtiéndolo en el centro político, religioso y cultural de la región andina.

Según la leyenda, el Cusco fue fundado por Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo, quienes emergieron de las aguas del lago Titicaca y establecieron la ciudad como el corazón del Imperio Inca. La ciudad fue diseñada en forma de un puma, un animal sagrado para los incas, con la fortaleza de Sacsayhuamán como su cabeza.
