BEST TRUCKS CRASH TESTING & SAFETY DEMONSTRATIONS
----------------------
Trucks represent just about 2% of registered vehicles, but they are involved in around 15% of road fatalities. A fully loaded commercial truck can weigh 30 times as much as a passenger car, and are taller with greater ground clearance. Limited visibility due to the shape of cargo compartment is one of the greatest contributors to truck-related accidents. Massive weight also means a truck needs more braking power to come to a full stop in order to avoid crashing into objects up ahead. Truck driver fatigue is a known crash risk too.
Established truck manufacturers like DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Scania, and Renault are putting some serious efforts to minimize the risk of accidents in their vehicles. Here are some of the best crash testing and safety demonstrations from the companies over the year.
----------------------

Scania Trucks
All Scania trucks are now equipped with Advanced Emergency Braking System by utilizing camera and radar to detect the existence of objects in front of the vehicle. In the event of imminent collision, AEBS alerts the driver using audible alarm. If the driver fails to respond, or does respond but applies insufficient braking force, the system intervenes to provide additional stopping power.

Volvo Trucks
If there is an automaker whose name is almost synonymous with relentless determination for safety, it is Volvo. The good thing is that Volvo applies high standard of safety not only to its passenger cars, but also trucks. But then again it is necessary as Volvo is one of the biggest suppliers of commercial transport vehicles in the world.

DAF Trucks
The new Euro 6 XF and CF models from DAF are fitted with a new technology called “crash bracket” which in essence is a combination of reinforced cab structure and energy-absorbing cab suspension. During a trailer back rear-impact crash test where the cabin hits a fully-loaded cargo of another truck at 25kmph, the crash bracket releases upon impact and slides backward to help absorb impact and reduce risk of injury to the driver.

MAN Trucks
A similar automated braking system is called Emergency Brake Assist in MAN trucks. This is actually a much more comprehensive system that utilizes radar sensors and windscreen-mounted camera to detect and monitor speed, distance, and angle of objects in front of a truck.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks
The new Mercedes-Benz Actros will be the first production truck to be fitted with semi-automated driving system called Active Drive Assist 5. Not only does it work like an enhanced cruise control, but also comes with electrically-assisted steering.

Renault Trucks
The latest models of Renault Trucks including the Range T, C, and D are now equipped with Forward Collision Warning and Advanced Emergency Braking System. Those two technologies are parts of Renault’s Intelligent Driving System, and they work basically to alert the driver of imminent collision with object up ahead, then apply autonomous braking system to prevent accident without the driver’s input.
