S. Korea going digital to create more jobs for young people

South Korea is planning to spend almost 5 billion U.S. dollars to help young job seekers.
And the key strategy will be 'digital'... in support of companies that hire young workers in IT positions.
The service industry will also be undergoing a digital transformation... in line with the shift to non-contact forms of services.

'Digital' will become South Korea's key employment strategy to tackle the pandemic-led job crisis.
For young job seekers aged 15 to 29, the government has decided to more than double the number of jobs in the digital sector from the previously planned 50-thousand to...110-thousand.
It will do this by offering up to 1-thousand-600 U.S. dollars a month for up to six months to small and medium-sized enterprises who hire young people for IT positions.
SMEs that hire young people for positions not related to IT can still receive up to 900 dollars a month for six months.
This aims to help young people find work in what is becoming an extremely tough job market.
Just last year, 180-thousand fewer youths were employed than a year earlier, and the real unemployment rate surged to over 25 percent.
"Companies that have the ability to create even one more job should do so to promote social solidarity and sharing."
Services the hardest-hit industry is also about to go through a major digital transformation, which aims to encourage employment.
The goal is to create 300-thousand more jobs in the field by 2025.
"By 2025, the government will help 1-thousand-350 SMEs adopt smart services using cutting edge ICT. More than 1-point-8 billion U.S. dollars of special guarantees will be provided for firms that use big data and AI."
The plan also involves building 200-thousand more digital payment devices and kiosks while making 500 traditional markets go digital in the next five years.
