October 22nd, 1999. The legendary “El Terrible” Erik Morales made the 8th defense of his WBC World Super Bantamweight Championship against Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough in the undercard of the Naseem Hamed vs Cesar Soto main event.

Prefight records; Morales 34(28)-0, McCullough 23(14)-2.

In September 1997, Morales lifted the WBC World Super Bantamweight Title via KO11 over Daniel Zaragoza and made 7 successful defenses between December 1997 and July 1999.

For his 8th defense, he was up against Irishman Wayne McCullough who was the former WBC Bantamweight Champion.

Entering the fight, the undefeated 23 year old Erik had notable wins over the likes of Reynante Jamili, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Angel Chacon, Armando Castro, Junior Jones, Jose Luis Bueno, Remigio Daniel Molina, Hector Acero-Sanchez & Daniel Zaragoza.

On the other hand, the 29 year old Belfast born Wayne had defeated top oppositions such as Fabrice Benichou, Jerome Coffee, Juan Polo Perez, Johnny Bredahl, Victor Rabanales & Yasuei Yakushiji.

It was an action packed and explosive battle from start to finish where both warriors gave their all but the champion had evidently won most rounds as he outworked the challenger in most exchanges through 36 minutes of action.

However, McCullough to his credit displayed unbelievable toughness, a granite chin as well as unyielding determination despite being unable to overcome the skills and smarts of young Morales who retained his title via UD12 with scores of 118-110 & 116-112 (2x).

In the main event, Hamed triumphed over Soto via UD12 to add the WBC Featherweight Title to his collection and retained his status as the WBO Featherweight Champion as well as his unbeaten record.
