160 pilot whales beached themselves on western Australian coast. Rescue teams, wildlife officials, and hundreds of volunteers came to their rescue. 130 beached pilot whales have been rescued but the others died. Beaching phenomenon occurs whales strand themselves on land. And the survival rate for beached whales is low. Whales can only survive for around six hours on land. According to reports, there are around 2,000 strandings each year worldwide. No one knows why beaching occurs. But theories suggest that when one member of a whale pod falls sick, is injured, or under threat, it goes towards the land. Because whales are highly sociable, other pod members follow them.
