Paced Bottle Feeding - How to Bottle Feed Your Breastfed Baby

Описание к видео Paced Bottle Feeding - How to Bottle Feed Your Breastfed Baby

BENEFITS OF PACED BOTTLE FEEDING:
-Keeps your baby from overfeeding
-Aids their digestion
-Makes feeding more calm
-Prevents excessive weight gain and reflux

KEYS TO PACING BOTTLE FEEDINGS:

Hold your baby upright at least a 45 degree angle or more
Can use side-lying position as well--just make sure head is higher than hips
Baby's head should be slightly tilted back

Tickle baby’s lips with the nipple and have them latch on
Lips should flange and be relaxed
Make sure the bottle nipple isfully inserted

Hold bottle mostly horizontal
Some families worry about air swallowing--burping will help if that happens

Every 20-30 sucks, tilt the bottle down but leave the nipple in baby's mouth
Wait until baby sucks again, then tilt bottle back up so baby is drinking

When baby stops sucking or unlatches, end the feeding

Burp after every ounce if needed/preferred

WHY IT HELPS:
This is especially important in childcare settings
Babies will end up preferring the fast flow of bottle feeding and may reject the breast
They may overfeed and stretch out their tummies and no longer be satiated on normal and appropriate amounts of milk
Paced bottle feeding will have the baby take 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours (normal amounts of breastmilk)
Babies who are bottle fed have a higher risk of obesity at one year of age whether or not they’re breastmilk or formula fed
You won’t make more and more breastmilk over time—the volume stays the same
