In the last few years, India’s road network has seen a major development, now presently standing as the second largest road network in the world. As India’s infrastructure continues to push with future road connectivity, a number of road projects are also lined up with plans to construct and expand kilometres of national highways and high-speed corridors. Amid the ongoing development, in what can be said as a major development, the cities of Mumbai and Kolkata might soon get seamless access-controlled expressway connectivity. Mumbai and Kolkata will have nearly seamless access-controlled expressway connectivity by 2027. The connectivity is expected to be done through a couple of upcoming expressways that help to connect different cities falling between the two metropolitans. The four major expressways are the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, the Nagpur-Bhandara-Gondia Expressway, the Raipur-Dhanbad Economic Corridor, and the Varanasi-Kolkata Expressway.

Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway
The Samruddhi Mahamarg or Nagpur-Mumbai Expressway (officially known as Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg) and Maharashtra Expressway-2 (ME-2), is 6-lane wide (expandable to 8), 701-km long access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra, India. It is amongst the country's longest greenfield road projects, which will connect the two capital cities of the state, its capital, Mumbai, and its third-largest and alternate capital city, Nagpur.
Nagpur-Gondia Expressway
A 127-km highway in Eastern Maharashtra, it will be an extension of the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway which will help to connect the districts of Nagpur, Bhadra, and Gondia and will reduce travel time between Nagpur and Gondia to about two hours.
Varanasi Kolkata Expressway
A new expressway will be built from Varanasi to Kolkata which will pass through Jharkhand. 610 km long Varanasi Kolkata Expressway by NHAI is a proposed 8 lane access-controlled highway with a route alignment connecting Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Ranchi in Jharkhand, and Kolkata in West Bengal. This greenfield expressway under Bharatmala Pariyojna (BMP) Phase 2 will run parallel to National Highway NH-2 (old) and link Varanasi Ring Road Km 00.000 (near Barhuli village) to Km 610.417 NH-16, near Uluberia, Howrah District, West Bengal. There are a total of 50 expressways in India in which vehicles run at a speed of 120 kmph. Two wheelers are usually not allowed in these fast moving expressways.
