LIVE: Bankman-Fried sentenced after fraud conviction

Bankman-Fried, 32, was convicted in November of seven charges involving fraud and money laundering for what prosecutors describe as “one of the largest financial frauds in history.”

He had been hailed, little more than a year earlier, as the saviour of cryptocurrency, for founding FTX, a trading exchange that promised a safe and well-regulated environment in which to buy and sell bitcoin, ethereum and other coins.

In November 2022 the exchange went bankrupt and it emerged that about $8 billion had been diverted from customer accounts to pay back loans owed by his hedge fund, Alameda Research.
