Coaching vs Mentoring | Coaching Tips for Managers

Описание к видео Coaching vs Mentoring | Coaching Tips for Managers

One of the most common questions for new coaches: What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

When I first started Coaching I thought that coaching and mentoring were the same.

This is not surprising as fundamentally both are focused on helping people. Secondly, the skills to do them well are the same. You need to listen well, ask good questions and be self-aware.

Although there are commonalities, there are big differences too.

One difference is the role you play in the problem-solving process.

Mentoring: Let's think through this problem together. I'll share some ideas, from my experience, that could help you.

Coaching: You help the person do most of the thinking. You focus not on giving advice but on creating a space for the person to do good thinking.

This video expands more on these differences. It also shares a model to help you decide when to coach and when to mentor.
