Hyderabad's Bowenpally Vegetable Market, once just a marketplace, has evolved into an innovative waste-to-power plant, thanks to an initiative by the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology. Every day, the market generates 3-4 tonnes of organic waste, now turned into energy. The waste undergoes a process in high rate biomethanation technology-based Anaerobic Gas lift Reactors, transforming into biofuel through anaerobic digestion. This biofuel is then used in biogas generators to produce up to 800-1,000 units of electricity daily from ten tonnes of waste. The electricity produced is sufficient to power over 100 streetlights, 170 stalls, the market's administrative building, and its water supply network. Additionally, the plant's biogas output is utilized in canteens, substituting about 30 kg of LPG cylinders daily, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.
