Johnny Depp faced cross-examination on Thursday after two days of testimony against ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he has accused of ruining his reputation and career with false accusations of domestic violence.

Heard’s lawyer J. Benjamin Rottenborn asked about Depp’s relationship with Marvel star Paul Bettany, best known for playing Vision in WandaVision.

During a 2020 U.K. libel case, which Depp lost, several private and disturbing text messages with Depp were read in court. These texts from 2014 were again read in court Thursday, including messages from Depp, who texted Bettany, “Let’s drown [Heard] before we burn her," and “I will f–k her burnt corpse afterward to make sure she is dead.”

Several text messages from Depp discussing drugs and drug usage were read aloud, including references to cocaine, marijuana and various pills.

A large portion of Thursday afternoon’s questioning was dedicated to the day Depp’s finger was severed. In both an audio clip and several text messages, Depp refers to that day as “the day I chopped off my finger.”

Tensions rose in the courtroom as Rottenborn cast doubt on whether the actor had been sober from alcohol for 18 months.

6:17:43 Perhaps the most disturbing details to be revealed during Thursday’s cross-examination came in the late afternoon, when Rottenborn played for the court a video of a fight between the couple, that Heard had attempted to secretly record.

The court hearing is the latest in a very public legal battle between the divorced couple, with Heard, 35, and Depp, 58, both claiming to be victims of domestic violence. Depp filed a $50-million defamation lawsuit over a Washington Post op-ed penned by Heard in late 2018 about being a victim of domestic abuse.

As the trial continues, jurors will hear from several potential witnesses, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, actor James Franco and Marvel WandaVision star Paul Bettany.

Court proceedings are expected to last about six weeks with a jury verdict determining if Heard defamed Depp at the trial’s end.
