The year before the proverbial you-know-what hit the fan and Alexei Ulanov and Ludmilla Smirnova got married and tore apart Soviet pair skating, Smirnova was still skating with Suraikin and this was the closest they ever got to beating Rodnina & Ulanov.

In the SP Ulanov had singled the required sbs double salchow and it was reported that they were not on speaking terms as a result and didn't even practice together on the day of the LP. The stage was set for an upset but a few errors late on kept them from destroying Rodnina's unbeaten record.

However this is beautiful skating and she especially, is delightful.
