The 29th & 30th April 2023 saw the return of the Hunter Valley Steamfest to Maitland for the first time since 2019. Steamfest is one of the premiere rail heritage events in New South Wales with numerous steam and other heritage visiting Maitland and the Hunter Valley for two days of heritage train trips around the area. This year the event was attended by steam locomotives 3801; Australia's most famous steam locomotive which was recently restored to operational condition, Beyer-Garratt 6029, 5917, and Victorian Railways locomotive R766. The highlight of the event is the Great Train Race on the Sunday; which this year saw the four steam trains race against one another from Waratah station to Maitland.

In this video we see all of the action from Steamfest 2023. We start with clips from Day 1; including seeing 3801 and diesel locomotive 4201 on trips to Branxton, 6029 and diesel locomotive 4501 on trips to Paterson and Newcastle, and R766 on trips to the Waratah Coal Loop in Newcastle. We also see some clips of the CPH Railmotors. On Day 2 we witness a spectacle of steam as we see the four steam trains side-by-side as part of the Great Train Race at Victoria Street. For the rest of the day we see 6029 and R766 at various locations along the line between Maitland and Newcastle, although we also see 5917 as it departs on its trip to Singleton. We finish the video as we see 3801 and 6029 pass Maitland Station light engine
