"Holy Is His Name" is based on the Canticle of Mary, a hymn based on the Canticle or Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55), which Mary proclaims after the jubilant meeting of Mary, pregnant with Jesus, and her relative Elizabeth, pregnant with St. John the Baptist.

This canticle is not only the inspiration for "Holy Is His Name," it has been a daily hallmark of the prayer of the Church for centuries.
