The work was produced and created by artists Grégoire Dupond (Film) and Teho Teardo (Music) for the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria (GNU) in Perugia, Italy, for an exhibition celebrating the 300th anniversary of Giambattista Piranesi birth. Oct 2020-Jan 2021. As a consequence of the pandemic of COVID-19, the exhibition has been scaled down to an online show.
“Piranesi Carceri d’Invenzione 300 anni” is a new work inspired by the film produced for Factum Arte and Fondazione Giorgio Cini in 2010. Great thanks to Fondazione Cini for the scans of their collection prints used to make this work.
A virtual animation of the 16 etchings from the Imaginary Prisons (Carceri d’Invenzione) by Giambattista Piranesi, 2020.
This series of 16 visionary images, originally etched by Piranesi when in his late 20’s, shows the workings of his imagination, merging his architectural ambitions with his obsessive interest in antiquity.
Working from the second state of each print, a complex 3D environment has been assembled creating the sensation that you are walking into and around these contradictory and visionary spaces.
The Carceri are the ‘prisons of Piranesi’s imagination’.

L'opera è stata prodotta e realizzata dagli artisti Grégoire Dupond (Film) e Teho Teardo (Musica) per la Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (GNU) di Perugia, in occasione della mostra organizzata per il terzo centenario della nascita di Giambattista Piranesi, in programma per il periodo Ottobre 2020 - Gennaio 2021. A seguito della pandemia da COVID-19, la mostra è stata trasformata in una mostra online.
"Piranesi Carceri d'Invenzione 300 anni" è una nuova opera, ispirata al film prodotto per Factum Arte e la Fondazione Giorgio Cini nel 2010. Un grande ringraziamento va alla Fondazione Cini per le scansioni delle incisioni della loro collezione, utilizzate per realizzare quest'opera.
Il film d'animazione sarà caricato su questa pagina prima o il 4 ottobre 2020, in occasione del trecentesimo anniversario della nascita di Giambattista Piranesi.
