Come join me on a high definition driving tour of Palo Duro Canyon. Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. It is located outside of Canyon, Texas. Palo Duro Canyon is roughly one hour away from Amarillo, Texas.

In this driving tour we will explore the scenic roads in Palo Duro State Park. We will loop around the park a few times to get a good look at the canyon from different angles. Keep your eyes open for the wildlife in the park, it's deer season! There are lots of deer running around if you look closely.

The canyon cuts deep through the rock, and the area was developed in the 1930s as a CCC project. CCC stands for Civilian Conservation Corps, and they were responsible for a lot of the buildings and infrastructure in State and National parks throughout the United States.

Palo Duro Canyon is also referred to as the Grand Canyon of Texas because it is so large. It is located in the northern part of Texas which is often referred to as the Texas Panhandle.

There are many improvements in the park that make it an ideal place to go on vacation. In addition to the lovely scenic roads that you will see on this drive there are also lots of well maintained hiking trails. There are a lot of camping loops for tent camping or camping in a trailer or other recreational vehicle. There are also a lot of trails for mountain bikers to use. Some people brought their own kayaks to use in the river. At the time of this scenic drive horse rentals were closed due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but ordinarily horseback riding is an option.

The campsites feature nearby buildings with normal flush toilets and stalls with showers. If you get muddy from your outdoor activities you can easily clean up. There are drinking fountains and water bottle refilling stations, but those were closed due to the pandemic.

The campsites at Palo Duro Canyon offer hook ups for large RVs. These campsites are very popular and you may have to book them in advance, especially in the winter months where the weather is very nice.

There were a lot of people out and about enjoying the sunshine and cooler weather at Palo Duro Canyon. The State Park also featured a gift shop that had some small snack items and souvenirs.

This video is in Ultra High Def 4k, so you can feel like you are immersed in the experience of driving through the canyon area.

The areas is known for having a geological formation called a hoodoo. A hoodoo is a rock formation that sticks up from the ground, forming a small tower structure. The most notable hoodoo in Palo Duro Canyon is called Lighthouse Rock which has a very distinctive shape.

There is evidence of human habitation of the Palo Duro Canyon area for well over ten thousand years.

According to Wikipedia, well known groups of Native Americans who have resided in the area include the Apache, the Comanche, and the Kiowa.

Many people may be familiar with the famous rancher, Charles Goodnight, who had immense landholdings in the area. Charles Goodnight is a common figure in fiction about the Texas Panhandle, but most people are familiar with a fictionalized version of Charles Goodnight who appeared in the Lonesome Dove series.

American artist Georgia O'Keefe created many paintings based on Palo Duro Canyon during her time living in the Amarillo area.
