During the 1960s, Jamaica witnessed the rise of three interconnected genres: ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Ska, the precursor to rocksteady, burst onto the music scene with its upbeat tempo, lively horn sections, and infectious dance rhythms. Prominent ska artists from the era include The Skatalites, Prince Buster, Toots and the Maytals, The Wailers (featuring a young Bob Marley), Derrick Morgan, and Desmond Dekker. As ska evolved and transitioned into rocksteady in the mid-1960s, the music slowed down, showcasing smoother grooves and more intricate vocal harmonies. Rocksteady introduced legendary artists such as Alton Ellis, The Paragons, The Melodians, The Techniques, The Gaylads, The Jamaicans, The Uniques, The Sensations, and The Ethiopians. Together, these genres laid the groundwork for the eventual emergence of reggae, which would take the world by storm in the following decade with artists like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Jimmy Cliff at the forefront.
