Building a Land Yacht for my 3 Year Old

This project started after I tried to get my boy sailing an optimist dinghy and kind of failed. Got a bit stuck on the idea to get him understand sailing as early age as possible and made a parallel line with land sailing for a start, since he was already biking he could easily make sense of steering any way.

I googled a bit on different models and ended up making a hybrid of all I found on the go, picking the best bits and pieces from my perspective. There wasn’t really a budged but all ended up on about 1100€, excluding work hours that was about 50-60. For sure I did overcomplicate some things but I did enjoy the build and my boy is super happy to sail his land yacht.

At first, he got a shock cord for a main sheet to get him focused on the steering but after a day ripping on the beach he learned how to depower the boat by sailing into the wind. Another thing I added later was a small go-cart seat with a safety belt in case of capsize. Since he’s kind of young I still run or bike with him just to make sure he is fine. It’s amazing how fast kids learn new things.
