Throughout the development of Final Fantasy 7, the creators were constantly looking for ways to push boundaries... and given that "life" was a central theme, this led to them thinking about how they could make the concept of "death" more harsh.

This saw them come up with the idea of Aerith Gainsborough, one of the main characters, dying mid-way through the experience. They wanted players to feel helpless about the situation, so that they would be able to emphathise with the in-game characters and have a genuine sense of loss.

It made Aerith's actions and relationships much more impactful. And as the game developed we got to learn about her harsh early life alongside her mother, Ifalna, and how her relationship with Zack changed her perspective. This then helped her to support and be there for Cloud as their journey took them outside of Midgar on a quest to defeat Sephiroth and save the world from annihilation.
