This One Grading Secret Applies Color Theory in Films Almost Instantly

Could a confused filmmaker go from not understanding color theory to applying it to create visually interesting films even without going to film school?

Well that's where I was at... and before I reveal how to do this instantly I want to first share my frustration.

I desperately wanted to understand this topic and more importantly be able to apply it in my color grading. Yet it seemed like I would need to go to a fancy film school or luck out and work in a large post production facility with a senior colorist that would reveal their magic bag of tricks.

I felt inadequate in such a visual profession where it seemed like these concepts should be second nature.

But after spending a couple years working on set observing art direction and learning the correction tools I finally came to discover the secret to implementing these concepts in the grade.

The two ways to apply color theory in the color grade is to either:

- Push colors into the tonal range using the color wheels/curves
- Apply a secondary or isolated color correction

Or any combination of the two.
