Fantasy Book Cover Design Process | Speed Art

It’s book cover design magic time! 🔥

Today we want to show you how the magnificent cover design for Abbey Franer’s fantasy Dragonhearted was born 🐲

✨ As always, we started with creating our main character. Since the protagonist was an archer, we had to spend some time cropping the picture and all the details of the girl’s outfit. Then we combined two images of female archers to create the final version of the main character. We retouched the picture and balanced light and shadow to ensure the girl looks realistic and proportionate.
✨ Next, we picked the background image with a view of the forest and added the pictures of the dragon and main character we worked on previously. We highlighted the background to illuminate the dragon hidden in the shadow and ensure the readers notice it on the cover.
✨ Finally, we retouched the whole image, adjusted shadows and highlights to make sure the picture looks balanced and natural, and added more plants and leaves to the foreground to create a feeling of a deep and mystical forest. Lastly, we slightly darkened the whole cover except for the center to direct the readers’ gaze on the heroine and the dragon and added the book’s title and author’s name.

The book cover design process is so relaxing, agree? 🤩
