April 25 on The Story: As we covered extensively in our "Tainted Waters" series, many families in rural Morrow and Umatilla counties rely on residential wells that are contaminated with harmful nitrates — something the state of Oregon has known about for 30 years, and has long been linked to agricultural industries in the region. But getting government to take meaningful action at any level has been a slow and difficult process, literally decades in the making. This week, Gov. Tina Kotek and EPA Regional Administrator Casey Sixkiller met with community organizers to hear about the problems on the ground and pledge to keep working on solutions — both in the short-term and for the future.
