We’ve got 5 things you need to know before you purchase the Hamax Caress Child bike seat:

0:23 1. Harness System
1:17 2. Age & Size of Child
2:16 3. High Quality, Easy-to-Use Features
3:19 4. How the Recline Works
3:58 5. Mounting (Frame & Rack)
5:31 Bottom Line

(1) THE HARNESS SYSTEM IS INCREDIBLY EASY TO USE

The straps easily adjust in height by lifting up on the handle on the rear of the seat and sliding the straps up or down.

The sliding system provides continuous adjustments to help you get a more precise fit for your child. As a comparison, most child bike seats only provide 2 or 3 options for shoulder strap height, and adjusting them takes more time.

To tighten the shoulder straps, pull down on the strap. To loosen, push the red horizontal button under the slider, and pull up. This can be done with one hand!

(2) WHAT'S THE BEST AGE AND SIZE CHILD FOR THE CARESS?

Based on our testing, we found the Caress is a great fit for babies as young as 12 months, and maxes out at a best fit for an average 3.5 or 4 year old.

The Caress is one of the best rear seats for riders as young as 12 months because its shoulders straps adjust lower than most.

For taller kids, the Caress’ max shoulder height is about the same as Thule’s, but the rubber tops of the shoulder straps don’t flex enough to comfortably accommodate taller riders as well as other seats do (like the Thule RideAlong).

The shoulder straps of the Hamax are about 3” apart, while most other seat's straps are 4” apart. This narrower spacing makes the harness less ideal for bigger and older riders because the rubber tops of the shoulder straps can rub on the child’s neck.

(3) HIGH-QUALITY AND EASY TO USE FEATURES

The Caress seat is made from a thick, very high quality plastic material with high sides for extra protection.

The back and bottom of the seat are lined with a thin, felt-like fabric material. There isn’t any rear ventilation, so if you live in a hot area, take that into consideration!

The footrests of the Caress slide up and down for simple and exact placement, which is standard for higher-end child bike seats.

The dual-mounting bars of the frame-mounted Caress allows the seat to slightly bounce up and down to cushion every bump and drop along the ride.

The rack-mounting Caress has a proprietary rack adapter with two large spring shocks to absorb the impact from bumpy terrain.

(4) HOW DOES THE RECLINE WORK?

The seat reclines by simply turning the large gray knob in front of the buckle of both styles of seats.

Unfortunately, like all child bike seats that recline, the saddle of the bike can get in the way of the seat fully reclining. The Caress cannot be moved back in order to allow for additional recline. Like all rear-mounted seats, the Caress must be positioned over the bike’s rear axle in order to keep the seat properly balanced on the bike.

(5) HOW DO YOU MOUN THE CARESS TO YOUR BIKE?

FRAME MOUNT:
The frame-mounted seat attaches to the bike via a mounting bracket that attaches to the seat tube of a bike. The bracket of the Caress is unique in that its rear portion is designed to be able to mount to the seat tube even if there is an exterior brake cable. No other frame-mounting bracket offers this feature.

Once the mounting bracket is attached to your bike, place the end of the mounting arms into the holes in the top of the mounting bracket. When properly inserted, two green safety tabs will protrude through the bracket. To release, push on the group of eight circles on the face of the mount, and lift the seat up and out.

The base of the seat should be 10-12 cm above the highest point of the rear tire (its center, directly above the rear axle) when mounted. You can adjust this distance by moving the mounting bracket up or down the bike’s seat tube.

RACK MOUNT:
Place the seat over your rack and twist the side knob until you can’t turn it anymore. As you twist, four sturdy plastic clamps (2 on each side) securely pinch the rack to keep the seat in place.

SO WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?

The Hamax Caress boasts impeccable quality, is easy to use, and easy to mount. The Caress is easily one of best bike seats we’ve used. Based on more narrow shoulder strap spacing, the Caress is best suited for kids under 4 years old.
