The Surkhet Valley was part of the Khas kingdom which controlled parts of Nepal, India and Tibet during the 11th and early 14th centuries. Sinja Valley in Jumla District of Karnali Province was the capital of the state. However, the Surkhet Valley, which connects the northern Himalayas with the southern plains of the Terai, was a center of trade in the Middle Ages. There are many archaeological sites, temples and ruins in this area.
